This morning my husband saw a scorpion near the well and decided it would make a lovely pet. Specifically this guy:
I’m not really thrilled about this. What do Scorpions eat anyways? This little guy is perhaps three inches long.
These black scorpions are the most common type we see by far in Thailand and there are many around the area. I’ve found them under a broken floor tile in our bungalow and hiding in a few damp crevices. Be especially careful if overturning an old rotted log. That seems to be their favorite hiding place.
This type is not considered venomous or too dangerous with a sting that has been likened to that of a bee or hornet. I never thought they’d be aggressive but they will obviously sting if you say uncover their hidey hole and put your hand on them, or if you try to put on your shoes without shaking them out first. I’ve never been stung but one day after a heavy rain apparently flooded a black scorpion out of his hidey hole he emerged in front of our bungalow, very aggressively walked up to my husband who was trying to fix something on the front door and stung him on his lower ankle. I watched the whole thing happen it was only maybe 2 seconds from the scorpion’s appearance to the sting.
Ka’s ankle swelled up a bit around the area of the sting but it was nothing too major. I joked with him later that the way this black scorpion just came out of nowhere then walked directly towards my husband at a fast rate of speed and stung him meant maybe he was the spirit of somebody trying to teach him a lesson. It was probably that Scorpio first husband of mine, if I had to guess. Oh’s ghost strikes again.
Ka wanted to keep that one as a pet too, remarkably, but it got out of the colander he put it in the next day. I sometimes think I am rarely bothered even by these creepy crawlies because I am generally a catch and release type of person. Who knows?
Have you ever encountered a scorpion?
Now I have a song going through my head:

Tarantulas are not uncommon as pets, they are fuzzy and do not sting. Even African hissing cockroaches at 3-4 inches long can be kept as pets, but a scorpion? They would be hard to snuggle and handle!
I had a girlfriend that didn't do much but lay around and bare her teeth once in while .
Fed her to my pet cougar .
